NYC Joint Venture
At the Cannabis Society (TCS), our goal is to build a global platform that moves the cannabis industry forward and helps in its growth by hosting business conferences and dinners of influence. To continue fostering the community, TCS recently introduced a new event, the Joint Venture Conference. After a successful first-run in February, we hosted the Venture Conference in New York and partnered with Zuber Lawler, Namaste MD, CEO Global Network and AC Lion.
Our goal? For F & B brands, tech companies, retail chains, cultivators, License Producers and large enterprises to strike a joint venture deal with one another.
Six presenters had the chance to showcase their company to four expert panelists and a room full of License Producers and large enterprise brands with hopes to strike a deal.
After each presentation, the expert panelists have the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback to each speaker. The panel was made up of experts in the cannabis industry including:
Tom Zuber, Managing Partner of Zuber Lawler
Tom Zuber has advised some of the most iconic companies in the world on their patent and trademark portfolios. He is at the cutting edge of cannabis patent and trademark law. Zuber holds a law degree from Columbia Law School, a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard Government School, and a biomedical engineering degree from Rutgers University, where he graduated with highest honors.
Dennis Byrne, Managing Director, Alternative Capital Group at Canaccord Genuity
Dennis Byrne is the Managing Director of the Alternative Capital Group at Canaccord Genuity and a member of the US Executive Committee. Byrne has been with CG since 2006 in sales and leadership roles with mandates focused on establishing Cross Border and Priority sales teams. In addition, he was an integral part of CG establishing a New York office and network. As the relationship manager for his own clients, he cultivates new partnerships that complement the firm’s growth strategy.
James McMillan, VP Business Development of Hexo Corp
As Vice-President for Business Development, James McMillan plays a leading role in identifying strategic opportunities in the expanding cannabis market. From the development of new and innovative product lines for the medical and recreational markets, to building strong relationships with commercial partners, McMillan is responsible for establishing and expanding our market position in Canada and beyond. McMillan brings more than 20 years of executive experience in strategic sales, marketing and business development with an entrepreneurial spirit, strong negotiating skills, and expertise in developing growth markets to his role as our Vice-President for Business Development.
Narbe Alexandrian, President of Canopy Rivers
Narbe Alexandrian is the President of Canopy Rivers, the venture capital affiliate of Canopy Growth, and the largest cannabis VC fund in the world. Prior to joining Canopy Rivers, Alexandrian was a Venture Capitalist at OMERS Ventures, the largest and most prominent technology venture capital fund in Canada. During his tenure, he helped fundraise for two VC funds ($520M of capital), sourced and lead multiple debt/equity financings, and acted as a Board Observer for a number of portfolio companies. Alexandrian is currently a Sessional Instructor at the Schulich School of Business, teaching technology entrepreneurship and venture capital within the undergraduate and MBA programs. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the Schulich School of Business at York University and is a Chartered Professional Accountant.
